Dear Friends of Knox County, Whitley County & Corbin Independent School Systems,

Researchers and educators have long known that a lack of sufficient food can permanently affect a child's mental as well as physical development. Hungry children simply don't learn as well as children who are well fed. According to Principals and Family Resource Center Coordinators in the Corbin Independent School System, at least 50% of local school children participate in the free and reduced breakfast/lunch program. Many of these children have little or no food from the time they leave school on Friday until they return the following Monday.

Our goal is to involve community minded business', churches, civic organizations and individuals who would like to join us to improve the lives of children in need.

For the 2014-2015 school year, a total of 19,385 bags of food were placed in the backpacks of students Corbin Independent, Knox County and Whitley County schools. The Corbin Community Backpack Program, a nonprofit organization, was organized to ensure that no child in need in the Corbin area schools would go without weekend food.

Thank you for visiting our website and for your consideration of this project.

The Program Works Like This:
  • Children in need are identified by each school's Family Resource Center Coordinator.
  • Permission forms are signed by parent(s) and returned to the Family Resource Center.
  • Participating children stop by the Family Resource Center each Friday before leaving school.
  • A bag of food is then placed in the child's backpack.

Each bag contains items such as the following:

  Individual Cereal Box
Crackers
Instant Oatmeal
Dried Fruit
Cereal Bar
Fruit Juice / Fruit Drink
Fruit Bar

Vienna / Beenie Weenies

Easy Mac & Cheese
Pop-tart
Ramen Noodles
Fruit Cup
Cheese Crackers (No peanut products)
Pastries / Cookies
Cheez-it / Chips
Milk

The program is designed to ensure confidentiality and anonymity of the participants. Since the bags are placed in the student's backpacks before they leave the Family Resource Center, students never have to be seen with a food bag either in school or on the bus.

Our goal is to involve community-minded businesses, churches, civic organizations and

individuals who would like to join us to improve the lives of children in need.
